Abstract
Clerodendrum Jragrans, Morinda citrifolia and Vitex negundo, plants which are
easily found in Malaysia and other tropical areas around the world, are used traditionally
for the treatment of certain ailments. Phytochemical study revealed that the major
components in the essential oils of the flowers and leaves of C. fragrans are 1-octen-3-ol
and linalool, respectively, while sabinene is the most abundant compound in the leaf oil of
two varieties of V. negundo. Octanoic acid and hexanoic acid are the two major
compounds in the essential oil of M citrifolia fruits. Five compounds were isolated from
the solvent extracts of C. fragrans leaves. These are 1-hexacosanol, 1-octacosanol,
stigmasterol, a new compound identified as 8,9-dehydrouncinatone, and (3-carotene.
Regarding the biological study, bioassay for antibacterial and antifungal activities showed
that the essential oil from the fruit of M. citrifo/ia inhibited the growth of all types of
bacteria and a fungus (Candida a/bicans) although in low concentration (5000 ppm), while
high concentration of V. negundo essential oil and methanolic extract ofC.jragrans leaves
also showed positive results in these test. The extracts and essential oils of these three
plants were generally found to be nontoxic in the brine shrimps (Artemia salina) test,
except for the essential oil of M. citrifolia fruits.
