Abstract
This research aims to test the effectiveness of using a strategy based on algorithm
and heuristics (Algo-heuristic Method) in solving mathematics problems. This strategy
was adapted from a combination of two problem solving models that were suggested by
Landa (1984) and Polya (1957). This strategy was tested for its usefulness in solving
novel and routine mathematics .problems by forrrt two students of high and medium
abilities. Change in attitudes among students due to the new teaching and learning
approach based on Alga-heuristic Method was also studied.
This research employed the 2 x 2 factorial design. The first factor was the
instructional method, that is the AI go-heuristic Method and Traditional Method, while the
second factor was student achievement, that is high ability and medium ability. The
independent variable in this research was the teaching method, whereas the dependant
variable was the performance in solving routine and novel problems and also changes in
attitudes towards mathematics. The moderator variable was student ability (high and
medium). This research was conducted involving 120 Form two students chosen at
random from two schools of same s~ature. Two samples, with 30 pupils in each were
chosen r.t random from each school. One h7foup was made the experimental group and the
other was made to be the control group. The experimental group was taught mathematics
problem solving using the Alga-heuristic Method and the control group was taught using
the Traditional Method. At lhe end of the research a test was given and the results were
analyzed to study the effects of the two teaching methods.
The research showed that students using the Algo-heuristic Method achieved
lower than students using the Traditional Method. However, it was found students using
the Algo-heuristic Method showed positive results in sit\1ations where students had good
understanding of concepts presented. The weakness in the students using the Algoheuristic
Method was due to teaching methods used. It was noted that no specific
emphasis was made to the important steps in the solution process, especially in the
derivation of mathematical statements for final solution. Medium achieving students
could not appreci~te the new method because they were not given sufficient exposure in
using the method to solve problems. The limited time allocated for the teaching.·of Algoheuristic
Method did not allow for much reinforcement exercises on the understanding of
basic concepts. An interesting finding in this research was that although the pupils who
were taught the Algo-heuristic Method did not perform well, they showed a positive
attitude towards mathematics. This shows that the 1\lgo-heuristic Method has the
potential to be a good method to teach problem solving.
