Abstract
The adsorption of methylene blue onto chitosan and cross-linked chitosan beads
has been investigated. These beads are very useful as adsorption materials for effluent
treatment in the textile industry.
The study of adsorption properties involves several optimum parameters such as
agitation time and pH to test the maximum adsorption of the methylene blue dye by the
chitosan and chitosan-GLA beads. It is found that the optimum pH of adsorption is basic,
that is pH 8.0 for the chitosan beads and pH 10.0 for the chitosan-GLA beads. An
agitation time of 30 minutes was found to be the best for the adsorption of methylene
blue dye. The size of both beads are fixed < 250 !lm.
The Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal adsorption were used to test the
efficiency of adsorption and the appropriate constants that was determined. Experimental
data for the methylene blue dye adsorption on the chitosan and chitosan-GLA beads
comply with the Langmuir and Freundlich equation. The maximum adsorption capacity
of methylene blue on the chitosan and chitosan-GLA beads determined using the
isothermal Freundlich is 6.49 mg methylene blue/g chitosan-GLA and 1.87 mg
methylene blue/g chitosan beads. Experimental data indicates that the chitosan beads that
has been crossed linked with gluteraldehyde has better uptake capacities on methylene
blue dye than chitosan beads without crosslinking.
To explain the kinetic process of the adsorption, two models were used: pseudo
first-order model and pseudo second-order model. The study shows that pseudo-first
order is more suitably used to explain the kinetic of adsorption of methylene blue dye on
the chitosan and chitosan-GLA beads.
Finally, the percentage of the relative standard deviation (RSD) to ensure the
precision of the whole experiment on chitosan a nd crosslinked c hitosan for methylene
blue were at 2.47 % and 4.40 % respectively. These results show that the experiments are
reliable and acceptable.
