Abstract
Nitrification performance was studied in lab scale biological treatment system
using synthetic wastewater with four different types of media; Ceramic Ring A
(CRA), Ceramic Ring B (CRB), Japanese Filter Mat (JFM) and Filter Wool (FW).
Three experimental studies were done to evaluate the different media effectiveness in
removing ammonium through biological filtration; (1) monitoring the quality of
synthetic wastewater during start up period (2) effect of ammonium loading rates
using different media on nitrification performance and (3) effect of wastewater flow
rates using different media on nitrification performance. In experiment 1, the
establishment of the nitrification process in the lab scale biological treatment system
took about 35 days for all media. CRA media observed successfully maintained the
lower ammonium concentration in the effluent compared to the other's media.
Effluent of CRA, CRB, JFM and FW for the last 7 days of the experiment 1 contain
ammonium in the range from 0.38 to 0.72 mg/L, nitrite in the range 0.18 to 0.57
mg/L, nitrate (8.34 to 9.08 mg/L), pH (6.9 to 7.3), alkalinity (70 to 84 mg CaC03/L)
and dissolved oxygen (4.3 to 5.4 mg/L). In experiment 2, CRA, CRB, JFM and FW
media shows a positive relationship for ammonium conversion rate up to maximum
ammonium loading from 135 to 167 g/m2/day. As the ammonium loading
continuously increased from 204 to 238 g/m2/day, JFM and FW media showed a
decreased in ammonium conversion rates. Volumetric ammonium conversion rates
were also I?_Ositively affected by the effect of ammonium loading rate. However, it
I
has the limitation at 167 g/m2/day ammonium loading rates. In experiment 3, the
ammonium conversion rate decreased as flow rates increased and ranged from 0.08
to 0.46 g/m2/day for CRA, CRB, JFM and FW. The volumetJ.ic ammonium
conversion rate was also negatively affected by the increase of hydraulic loading
rates for CRA, CRB, JFM, and FW media. These results can provide information and
knowledge of the effectiveness Ceramic Ring A, Ceramic Ring B, Japanese Filter
Mat and Filter Wool media in the nitrification process.
