Abstract
development are still under endless speculations. The precise nature of language is still more
in the dark. Hence, contrastive analysis may be one of the tools that will enable us to analyse
the features and characteristics of a language ·by highlighting its differences and similarities
against another.
Thus, this study ultimately endeavours to examine the characteristics of the Noun Phrases of
the Malay and the English Language. In the similar vein, it aims to determine the similarities
and differences of the Nouns Phrases (N') of both languages within · the theoretical
framework of the X- Bar Theory representations as being outlined by Chomsky (1982) in the
Government and Binding (GB) Theory. In this. endeavour, all efforts are focused on N'
Subjects, N' in Predicates, N' in Passive Sentences and N' in Existential Sentences. This
study also heralds the translation strategies of Newmark (1981), Nida (1964) and the SapirWhorf
hypothesis to facilitate the analysis the translation strategies utilised by the translators
in rendering the texts.
This study has chosen the Malay novels of Shahnon Ahmad; Ranjan Sepanjang Jalan
(1966) and Rentung (1983) and the translated versions- No Harvest But A Thorn and
Rope of Ash, which were translated by Adibah Amin (1972) and Harry Aveling (1979)
respectively. Both of Shahnon's novels depict the veracious nature of the farmers' world by
providing a sharp and detailed authencity of the struggle and arduousness of this world.
Therefore, this has impelled the researcher to consider 1 both novels as the perfect "subject
samples" for the study.
The results of the study present a significant picture that in the case of rendering traditional
Malay· literary texts, aspects of linguistics as well as extra-linguistics, such as aspects of
culture, beliefs/thoughts, weltansch.auung, religion are the essential traits of the texts. These
traits have to be ·transferred and retained across the target language in order to portray the
beauty and the cultural scenario of the source language. On the contrary, for the translators
these traits are their main obstacles. Thus, the study indicates that the best solutions are
minimising the differences and conveying the· messages closest to the source language. In
the perspective of Translation Strategies, the study points out that Adibah Amin relies highly
on the Formal Translation while rendering words, phrases and sentences that embody the
Malay weltanschauung and religious theology. In contrast, Harry A veling displays the
tendencies of opting for the Dynamic Translation and very often slipping into the Purposeful
Translation in translating words, phrases and sentences that do not exhibit the Malay
weltanschauung and religious theology.
!flis study is intended that the findings and information obtained in this study will be applied
m future translation works for the development of the sphere and it is hoped that this study
would update and validate the Malay Linguistic and Translation domain.
