Abstract
This study has aimed to identify the strategies used by the second year pupils when solving Inathematical word problems. The sample of this qualitative study consisted of six primary second year pupils in Medan, Indonesia. They were selected based on: (a) their mathematics result in the mid-year examination, that is very good, good, and average; as well as (b) their mathematics teacher's advice. The data of this study were collected in a closed room by interviewing the pupils using eight question matemathical word problems. This is end to determine the types of strategies used by the pupils when solving mathematical word problems involving the operations of addition and subtraction. The findings of the interviews indicated that the pupils used many types of strategies to solve the mathematical word problems. The findings of the study indicated that in general the pupils were able solve the mathematical word problems. The detailed analysis showed that the strategies used the children to solve addition word problems were (i) algorithm, (ii) counting on to, (iii) counting down, (iv) bridging, and (v) matching. Meanwhile, the strategies to solve subtraction word problems were (i) algorithm, (ii) counting down, and (iii) bridging. The results of the analysis also found that: (i) the pupils could interpret the mathematical word problems but they could not connect them with the appropriate mathematical procedures of the operations; and (ii) the very good pupIls tended to use few strategies whereas the average pupils tended to use many strategies
