Abstract
The adsorption of humic acid onto chitosan and cross-linked chitosan beads with gluteraldehyde (chitosan-GLA beads) has been investigated. The chitosan beads are cross-linked to obtain a sorbent that is insoluble and has low swelling pencentage in acidic medium. The chitosan and chitosan-GLA beads are characterized using fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The uptake of humic acid from aqueous solution is determined from the changes in absorbance measured using uv-vis spectrometer. The optimum parameters are determined to measure the adsorption capacity. The optimum pH for both sorbents are at pH 4.0. Whereas agitation period and rotation speed have no effect on adsorption of humic acid. However, the agitation period is fixed at 30 minutes with rotation speed of 480 rpm. The different shape of isotherm for both chitosan and chitosan-GLA beads are studied. Two models are used to determine the maximum adsorption capacity. The models are Langmuir and Freundlich. The adsorption data of the chitosan beads correlate well with the Freundlich compares with Langmuir isotherm equation. However, the chitosan-GLA beads does not correlate any of the two models. Chitosan beads has better uptake capacity for the humic acid as <?ompare with chitosan-GLA beads. The humic acid adsorption ,.c apacity onto chitosan bead calculated from the Freundlich isotherm is 2.96 mg/g. Finally, the relative standard deviation (RSD) is small, 2.6 and 0.1 % for chitosan and chitosan-GLA beads respectively. This shows that the experiment has a good reproducibility.
