Abstract
A field survey was conducted to investigate the distribution of Cryptocoryne ciliata ·
in Larut Matang, Perak ( 4° 47 .8' N, 100° 38.0' E ). Six plots were established along the
main river; Sungai Larut (Plots 1 and 2 ), and its tributaries Sungai Lang ( Plots 3 and 4 )
and Sungai Jebong ( Plots 5 and 6 ). Cryprocoryne ciliata found grew in clump along the
river'bank. A regression curve was calculated based upon distance from the river mouth ( x)
and plant height ( y ). The regression was y = -75.46 + 46.89x - 2.59x2. The study on
life cycle and pollination ecology of C. ciliata was conducted at the palm oil plantation ( 4°
49.9' N, 100° 39.9' E ). The vegetative life cycle ( 1.7 years ) was relatively shorter
compared to the sexual life cycle ( 2.3 years ). The bright brick colour and the decaying
odour of the fruit attracted insects to the flowers of C. ciliata. Pest insects recorded were
from the Order Onhoptera and Diptera, whereas the pollinating insects were Drosophila
melanogaster (Order Diptera) and Haproncus species (Order Coleoptera). Experiments
on seed germination and petiole enlongation or C. ciliaw were carried out in PlanL HouseaL
Universiti Sains Malaysia. Percentage germinations were higher ( 95.0 ± 2.0%) on loamy
silt soil compared to on sand ( 40.0 ± 6.1 'Yo ). Seeds fail to grow on soil watered with 20%
sea water. No gennination also found in acidic (pH 3.5) water medium. The rate of petiole
enlongation was higher in submerged condition ( 1.95 em/ month ) compared to those
condition exposed to air ( 0.78 em/ month ).
