Abstract
Wind energy is a clean and inexhaustible energy source that has the potential to fight global warming which is very relevant today. Wind turbines can be categorized into two major types, horizontal axis wind turbine and vertical axis wind turbine. Vertical axis wind turbine can be further classified into three categories, Darrieus, Giromill, and Savonius wind turbines. The primary objective of this project is to design and develop a small-scale Savonius wind turbine. A two-bladed semicircular turbine blade are designed and built using PVC pipes. A direct current generator is used to convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy. Rotation of wind turbine per minute, output voltage, output current, output power, and efficiency increase when the wind speed flows through the wind turbine increases. The performance of the Savonius wind turbine is affected by turbulence when tested outdoors. Savonius wind turbines are able to self-start and rotate continuously when the wind speed is above 2m/s. The wind turbine generated an output power of 0.0795W when the approaching wind speed is 3.5m/s. Although the wind turbine is able to generate an output power, it was quite low. This is because the input power of the electric fan is low.
