Abstract
The failure of adolescents with Syntactic Specific Language Impairment to interpret movement-derived sentences of Wh- questions is an issue which has perplexed researchers in psycholinguistics. Music therapy involving a training called Auditory-Motor Mapping enable us to approach this issue. Therefore, 10 adolescents with Syntactic Specific Language Impairment will undergo music therapy while 10 adolescents with Syntactic Specific Language Impairment and 10 normal adolescents used as controls will not undergo music therapy. The samples of the present study consists of Malay-speaking adolescents. Before and after music therapy, scores, response time and response will be identified when they were tested for comprehension of Wh- questions using a binary sentence-picture that require matching tasks. The results indicated that adolescents with Syntactic Specific Language Impairment understood subject question who subject questions, which subject questions and who object questions but they fail to understand which object questions because they unable to assign a thematic role to an element which moved across another argument of the same type. However, adolescents with Syntactic Specific Language Impairment who undergo music therapy showed significant difference as compared with the adolescents with Syntactic Specific Language Impairment without music therapy, especially the comprehension of which object questions. Therefore, this study revealed that the effectiveness of music as a therapeutic tool to facilitate the comprehension of Wh- questions in adolescents with Specific Language Impairment.
