Abstract
This thesis is a study on diaspora of Aceh community in Kampung Acheh, Yan Kedah. This diaspora community established since the migration of Aceh people when the Aceh Sultanate was attacked by Netherlands. The study based on ethnography methods that have been carried out for six months in Kampung Acheh, Yan Kedah. The techniques used in covering the data were participant observer and in-depth interview with key informants. The informants were determined by using purposive sampling, selecting the certain population only as the samples. The informants were the Acehnese important people and other Acehnese people from Kampung Acheh, and the non-Acehnese people living in Yan. The results of this research were as follows, first, The Acehnese community in Kampung Acheh still loved their homeland, Aceh, Indonesia and proud of being Acehnese ethnic strongly in their soul. More than that, they claimed themselves as Acehnese people in their daily life. For them, Aceh was a homeland that had produced so many ulamas and heroes. That is why, becoming Acehnese people means being the Muslims who always have to talk and behave based on Islamic teaching. Second, to ensure the sustainability and the strength of Acehnese identity and culture in their life, the people of Kampung Acheh do various efforts, such as keeping speaking Acehnese language in their daily life. Acehnese language is also used in any internal activities, such as discussions, welcoming guests, etc. In addition, they usually cook Acehnese traditional foods, either for their daily life or celebrations, such as in weddings, Idul fitri, Idul Adha, and so forth. The other efforts done are those getting married with Acehnese people; naming places, streets, and buildings with the local Acehnese heroes’ names; using special Acehnese terms in calling people in their kinship; loving to collect all Acehnese things, such as handicrafts, accessories, foods, clothes, and books; and visiting Aceh either together with their families or friends or alone. Third, the Acehnese community kept doing the efforts on having harmonic relationship with the local Malay community, one of them is getting married with local Malay people. In a mixing Aceh-Malay family, restrictions and differences in both cultures are not shown up again, especially in foods and language aspects. Both cultures of theirs are equals.
