Acetone is classified in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) group that contributes more than 15% of total emissions of the primary pollutants to the environment. Acetone is easily found in either chemical industries or any daily activities. Thus, precautions should be taken by monitoring and detecting acetone in the environment due to severe effect of prolonged exposures to acetone. Semiconducting metal oxide based sensor is one of the reliable methods to monitor acetone in the environment. In the present study, tin oxide (SnO2) films were synthesized by using sol-gel method and deposited on alumina substrate by using dip coating technique. Layers deposited on the alumina substrate were varied from 3 to 15 layers and calcined at various temperatures ranging from 450 to 650°C. Characterizations by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrum, nitrogen adsorption/desorption (BET Surface Area), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopic (AFM) were carried for both SnO2 powders and film. SnO2 films were exposed to different operating temperatures ranging from 300 to 600°C to obtain the optimum operating temperature with various concentration of acetone ranging from 100 to 500 ppm. Sensitivity, response and recovery times of SnO2 films were measured. The results showed that the thickness of the films affected the sensitivity of the sensor. Thinner SnO2 films showed higher sensitivity as compared to the thicker films. The highest sensitivity was obtained at optimum operating temperature of 400°C. The results also showed that the sensitivity was increased with an increase of acetone concentration. Highest sensitivity of 19.96 was obtained with 3 layers of SnO2 coated on alumina substrate calcined at 550°C when exposed to 500 ppm of acetone at operating temperature of 400°C.en_US
