Abstract
This study examines the effectiveness of direct written corrective feedback and indirect written corrective feedback on the writing of 36 ESL Form Four secondary school students in terms of grammatical accuracy and lexical accuracy. Two intact classes were required to write a descriptive essay every week and correct their essays on alternate weeks after receiving written corrective feedback from their teachers. During the treatment, the 2 classes received: a) direct written corrective feedback and, b) indirect written corrective feedback respectively. The study is based on an explanatory sequential mixed methods design in which the quantitative results were analysed and discussed with the assistance of qualitative results. Findings indicate that students did not show any significant improvement regardless of which type of written corrective feedback they received. Apart from looking at the quantitative data on students’ grammatical accuracy and lexical accuracy, a semi-structured interview was carried out after the treatment to look at students’ opinions on the types of written corrective feedback they received. Several themes had been identified using thematic analysis. The findings of quantitative data that indicate students did not show any significant improvement might due to some limitations such as the duration of the research and the sample size. However, the findings of qualitative data is believed to have provided some useful tips for the educators to help students to improve in their writing. Nevertheless, this study shall be a stepping stone for researchers to conduct more in-depth research in the future, with bigger
sample size, longer duration of research or to include other types of written corrective feedback.
