Abstract
Penang Botanical Garden is a planting region for research purposes and a
center for collection of various species including local and other countries. It also
plays an important rule to supply certain plants, which are considered ornamental
~; and exotic, to serve the public park and personal demand. However, since 1936,
this park has been developed as a recreational place for public. Therefore, many
. facilities are provided for the users such as formal gardens, pavilion, pergola,
road, pathways, bridge, gazebo and resting-place. Currently, these parks still
exist as one of the Heritage Park especially for the next generation. Assumption
has been made that the studied area was already popularand famous. But the
question remains whether the spatial aspect and available designed facilities are
significant for recreational activities within the park. Therefore, much effort
should be put account on the park design in order to meet the site suitability,
characteristic and function can be assessed based on the user aspects. The
main problems identified are the recreational facilities have been provided
without considering the user aspect, conflict between the priority of land use and
conflict between the user need and botanical aspect. As a result, the park design
stills in the medium style and less effective. It should be emphasized that the
designed landscape elements should combine with the designed principles and
elements to produce an effective park. Therefore, there are interaction between
users requirement and the park functionality. In conclusion, the Botanical
Garden is unique and has its own identity. Although it cannot completely sustain
the requirement between botanic and recreational aspects, but the site
characteristics and natural ecological environment are capable to attract many
visitors and tourist.
