Abstract
This study aimed to develop a model of competency required for sports managers in Physical Education and sports centres in Isfahan Province, Iran. This study employed the mixed method design. The interviews and Delphi technique were used to collect qualitative data, whereas the questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data. The Sports Managers Competency instrument (SMC), developed by the researcher of this study, and was used for data collection. The sample of this study was selected through the stratified random sampling technique including 546 sports managers divided into three groups: top, middle, and lower level sports managers. In this study, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, One-Way ANOVA and Friedman test rankings were used for data analysis. The results of qualitative and factor analysis confirmed nine competency components. Each component includes several competency statements with some degrees of relationship among themselves. This study also aimed to determine the importance level of each competency component and the relevance of required competencies for sports managers. Therefore, to determine competencies for the top, middle, and lower level sports managers and to examine whether there was a significant difference in competencies among these levels. The ANOVA and post-hoc tests were performed, and the results indicated no significant difference in the importance level of some competency components of sports managers at different levels; however, some competency components were found to be more important for sports managers at different levels. To prioritize the components, Friedman Test was performed, and the results revealed that the business procedure component was the most important; whereas the organizational culture & professional ethic components were the least important for high-level sports managers. Programming techniques and sports foundation components were the most important; whereas organizational culture and professional ethic components were the least important for middle-level managers. In addition, organizational culture and professional ethic components were the least important for lower-level managers. Overall, nine specific competency components required for sports managers in sports organizations were determined. This study is, therefore believed to provide a solid basis for the scope of knowledge and performance required for sports managers in Iran as well as for the design of curriculum and sports managers’ evaluation. The findings of this study could also provide a pattern for succession planning and selecting sports managers in the future as well as knowledge base for further research. From the findings of this study, it was also suggested that further research should be conducted on the actual relationship between these competency components and the performance of successful jobs.
