Abstract
Jong Chian Lai is a Sarawak author who discusses numerous environmental issues, particularly in the context of ecological justice which consider the human welfare and environment as important. There is a strong relationship between the ecological justice and the belief of the local people as the belief actually influences the way they act towards the environment. However, this aspect has not yet been studied on Jong Chian Lai’s novels and short stories. Hence, the void will be filled by this study. Therefore, this study has set three objectives to be achieved, namely (1) to analyze the relationship of the Iban in Sarawak with the environment based on the Iban community’s belief system as reflected in the works of Jong Chian Lai; (2) to look into the conflict between the claims on survival and development with the preservation of the Iban tradition; and (3) to examine and evaluate how the author uses language to portray the environment and its relationship with the Iban. This study uses the ecological justice theory which is pioneered by Brian Baxter. This study finds out that the environmental issues relating to logging and construction of hydroelectric dams need ecological justice for the sake of human and other organisms welfare. The ecological justice which is discussed in this study is based on the Iban belief of gods and spirits. Furthermore, the novels and short stories which have been studied show that Jong Chian Lai uses an effective writing style in conveying the message to the readers. The result of this study is important to promote public awareness and concern about environmental issues, revealing the culture and way of life of the Iban in Sarawak, and to show the firm relationship between the Iban and their environment.
