Abstract
This study examined the predictive validity of the GSC, American SAT and British IGSE to first-year students’ GPA to determine the most appropriate criteria for admission of Jordanian students to the University of Jordan. This study establishes an academically appropriate cut-off score to improve the predictive validity of the admission criteria as measured by the first-year college (two semesters) GPA, by assessing the relationship between student retention rate after one year in college, the predictor variables, high school GPA and the Angoff and Bookmark methods to determine the cut-off scores. The study also appraises the different admission criteria to determine cut-off scores, reliability of the decision-making process, and the extent of influence of measurement error on the analyses. A comparative analysis between Angoff and Bookmark standards setting methods was also performed to derive cut-off scores of Jordanian General Secondary Certificate Examination (GSCE). The effectiveness of the derived cut-off scores was compared with the presently used cut-off scores. The sample consisted of 348 students admitted to the University of Jordan for the 2010/2011 academic year. Data were collected from the Admission and Registration Department. Data of faculty members who check the GSCE and determine the cut-off scores according to the Angoff and Bookmark Methods were also collected. The results showed that there is a statistically significant difference between the different cut-off scores on the predictive validity of GSC, SAT, and IGCES averages used in the admission process. The predictive validity of the Jordanian secondary school certificate examination was found to be statistically significant in predicting the cumulative average of the first-year University of Jordan students, with a determination coefficient of 3%. However, the predictive validity of SAT and GSE showed no significant differences for predicting cumulative average of the first-year University of Jordan students, with determination coefficients of 18.4% and 0.7%, respectively. Thus, Jordan’s GSC is seen as the best admission criterion for the University of Jordan. The results also showed that there is a statistically significant difference between the impact of cut-off scores determined by the United Admission Committee and the cut-off scores obtained from the Angoff and Bookmark methods in predicting the GPA of first-year students from each faculty of the University of Jordan. Based on the classification decisions, the cut-off scores given by the competition method was most appropriate for the College of Education Sciences, the Bookmark method for the College of Management, and the Angoff method for Engineering and Medicine colleges.
