This research aims to examine the coverage of Marina project, Tioman Island in several local newspapers. This research also serves to study the opinion of the residents in Kampong Tekek, the , representative from non-government organization and the journalists regarding the coverage of the marina project. The methods used in this research include content analysis based on Allan Bell's theoretiCal framework and discourse analysis. Meanwhile, interview and focus group interviews have been used to gather the opinions of the respondents. The results of this study supported part of the model recommended by Downs, 1972 (Cited in Campbell, 1999). The study has revealed the coverage of the Marina project, Tioman was limited and that there were major challenges to environment reporting in Malaysia. It is argued that the coverage of the Marina project needs to be improved in terms of its quantity and quality. The result of the content analysis, interview with the journalists and residents has enabled the researcher to identify that the political factor was actually an important element in influencing the coverage of certain environment issues in Malaysia. This research supported the opinion of Hansen (1991) that the government was the major source for environmental news and others sources were largely marginalized. By way of conclusion, the dissertation argues that the involvement of the public and environment interest groups is important in pushing the agenda on environment journalism to the core of the media work.en_US
