Abstract
This research is a multidisciplinary study in the field of visual communication.
The main objective of this study is to propose methods for tackling information
overload effects for postgraduate students and researchers while working with
scholarly databases. The study begins with a preliminary study on the problems and
ideas of the researchers regarding the scholarly databases. The most successful method
for dealing with the concept of large information resources, which is the main source
of information overload, is aggregation and visualization of the information and
transforming it into clusters and groups. The visualization design in this research is
based on Gestalt laws in order to achieve a simple design and robust implementation
which is both informative and effective in reducing the information overload effect.
As the design and implementation of visualizations require evaluation and update, the
model used in this study is the Successive Approximation Model. The direct effect of
the information overload on the researchers is increased cognitive load. Therefore, to
undertake information overload using visualizations, the proposed method should be
able to reduce cognitive load. In this study, eye-tracking technology is used to evaluate
the cognitive load of the users of the information visualizations designs
