Sediment and nutrient production is closely linked with surface runoff that cause erosion, transport, storage and in river basins which then enter into the lake ecosystem. This study was carried out from April 2008 to April 2009 with fortnight sampling procedure. The main objective of this study is to investigate the sediment and nutrient balance and sedimentation rates in South Pool of Bukit Merah Reservoir. The South Pool received sediment input and nutrients from Sg. Kurau catchment area and the North Pool of the reservoir. The sediment balance was estimated at 5614.64 tonnes year"1 (35.60%), 12091.67 tonnes yeaf1 (62.72%) of total phosphorus were deposited in the lake. About 145.16 tonnes year"1 (82.72%) oftotal nitrogen, 0.13 tonnes yeaf1 (0.37%) of nitrate, 3.09 tonnes year·1 (54.60%) of nitrite and 4.12 tonnes year·1 (40.87%) of orthophosphate were removed through spillway and channel. The sedimentation rate was measured by means sediment trap at five stations in the south pool. The average rate of sedimentation in the South Pool was 123.5 t km-2 day·1 where the highest sedimentation rate (319.48 t km"2 day"1 ) was near the river inlet. The trophic state of the South Pool was mesotrophic and water quality is still in good condition based on its physicochemical criteria.en_US
