Abstract
This study was conducted was to determine the potency of the aqueous honey
extracts of three different species of bee using in vitro antioxidant capacity assays and their
corresponding relationship with the phenolics and flavonoids contents. The 3 types of
different in vitro antioxidant assays were ABTS scavenging assay, DPPH scavenging assay
and FRAP reduction assay. The antioxidant capacity of the aqueous honey extracts were
found to be increased for all antioxidant assay as the concentration increases (dose
dependent), for ABTS (2,2’-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) scavenging
assay, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl) scavenging assay and FRAP reduction
antioxidant potential. The total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid content (TFC) were
determined according to Folin-Ciocalteu method and aluminium chloride method
respectively. The T.apicalis honey extract showed the highest phenolic and flavonoid
content and strong antioxidant activity. The samples which contained the highest
antioxidant activities (i.e honey extract of T.apicalis) is most likely as a consequences of
their highest phenolic and flavonoids content compared with the remaining samples. TPC
of the aqueous extracts with the highest value was produced by T.apicalis, followed by
H.itama, G.thoracica at concentration of 1 mg/ml. TFC of the aqueous extracts varies, with
the highest value was produced by T.apicalis at concentration of 1 mg/ml. The positive
significant linear correlation was confirmed between the values for the TFC and TPC and
antioxidant capacities of the honey aqueous extracts. Therefore, the aqueous honey extracts
demonstrated a high antioxidant value and interestingly it was associated with the TFC and
TPC of the tested honey samples.
