Abstract
Curing characteristics, mechanical properties, swelling behaviour and
morphology of kaolin filled natural rubber (SMR L) and epoxidized natural
rubber (ENR 50) compounds were studied. The effects of kaolin and
commercial silica (Vulkasil C) loading, different size of kaolin and the use of
silane coupling agent, Si 69 and palm oil fatty acid additive (POFA) in SMR L
compounds were also examined. Results show that kaolin filled SMR L
compounds exhibit better mechanical properties but longer scorch and curing
times than kaolin filled ENR 50 compounds. At a similar filler loading, silica filled
SMR L compounds showed better curing characteristics and mechanical
properties than kaolin filled SMR L compounds. Smaller particle size of kaolin
also gives shorter curing time, higher maximum torque and better mechanical
properties than larger particle size of kaolin in SMR L compounds. The use of
silane coupling agent, Si 69 and POFA has improved the curing characteristics
and mechanical properties of SMR L compounds. The improvement of these
properties was due to the better kaolin – SMR L interaction.
