Abstract
The relationship between aesthetic experience and
the Malay Modern Literature has not been systematically
comprehended in the perspective of modern aesthetics.
In relation to that, no attempt has been initiated to
venture into the possibility of exploring the works of
A. Samad Said, particularly in the context of aesthetic
experience. As a result, this study aims to explicate
the nature of such a relationship.
Accordingly, an aesthetic theory has been
d·esigned, known as rasa-phenomenology. Rasaphenomenology
is a consolidation and rectification of two
aesthetic theories. Based on rasa-phenomenology and th~
works of A. Samad Said, this study proceeds with four
interrelated objectives.The first objective is to describe an aesthetic
Jdgement according to the aesthetic experience of the
orks of A. Samad Said. The second objective is to
dentify the effectiveness of the objective correlatives
1hich cultivate the process of nourishing the aesthetic
:!Xperience. The third objective is to identify the
genres which have been successfully exploited by the
author in providing an effective aesthetic experience.
The final objective is to study to what extent the
process of intertextual aesthetic can provide an
effective aesthetic experience in the works of A. Samad
Said.
This study reveals four important findings which may
be summarised as follows: 1 I
Firstly, the aesthetic judgement reveals seven
literary expressions of which five are essential. They
are; "Rasa-Dahsya t," "Rasa-Kagum," "Rasa-Duka," "Rasa
Berang" and "Rasa Bene i." These five forcefull literary
expressions also manifest the effectiveness of · the
aesthetic experience as a result of which the objective
correlatives have been creatively and artistically .
crafted. Secondly, the effectiveness of the objective
correlatives in providing an efficacious aesthetic
experience has a significant relation with the techniques of writing of A. Samad Said. Thirdly, novel and .
poetry are the two genres which have been successfully
explored by A. Samad Said to provide an effective
aesthetic experience. Finally, a strong dialosism in
the works of A. Samad Said, allows the intertextual
aesthetic process to be successfully applied by a reader
which gives a strong impact to the effectiveness of the
aesthetic experience.
