Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of multimedia information representation of two methods: a) thematic and b) chronologic, on the historical understanding and reasoning among sequential and global learners. The independent variable was thematic and chronologic learning modes. The dependent variables were the understanding and reasoning in history while moderator variable is the sequential and global learning styles. The chronologic mode was designed with chronology frame of reference strategy that reflected an interactive timeline; whereas the thematic mode was developed by employing the concept map. The sample size consisted of 134 students, which were selected through purposive sampling from two secondary schools in Kedah, Malaysia. Sixty nine of the students were assigned to learn through chronologic mode, while sixty five of the students were assigned to learn through thematic mode. In this study, 2X2 factorial design was conducted. The results showed that there is no significant differences in the historical understanding and historical reasoning between students who learn through chronologic and thematic modes. Besides, there is no significant differences in their historical reasoning and understanding between sequential and global students that learn through thematic and chronologic mode. However, students who learnt through thematic mode have the higher gain score of historical understanding and reasoning than the student who learnt through chronologic mode. The study showed that students who portrayed significant difference in their gain scores for historical reasoning and understanding reflected the effectiveness of thematic information representation, which is concept map in increasing their historical knowledge and historical reasoning compared to the chronologic mode. Therefore, thematic modes designed can be considered as an alternative method for history learning in the near future.
