Abstract
Lack of safety participation in Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS) has increased the risk of hazards at work among employees. Occupational accidents as a result of these hazards would affect not only employee’s morale towards work, but also the cost of recovery and the rebuilding of its reputation. This study intends to examine the relationship of the safety capital of management safety commitment, safety training, reward system (extrinsic reward and intrinsic reward), safety teamwork and employee involvement that influence safety participation in OSHMS based on resource-based view (RBV) theory. In addition, the moderator of safety advice is tested towards safety participation in OSHMS using the knowledge-based view (KBV) theory. A total of 102 responses were collected from the manufacturing firms across Malaysia. Data were analysed using the SPSS and Smart Partial Least Square (SmartPLS). Results showed that management safety commitment, intrinsic reward, safety teamwork and safety communication affect employee involvement. Furthermore, employee involvement is also related to safety participation in OSHMS. Specifically, employee involvement mediates the relationship of safety teamwork and safety communication with safety participation in OSHMS. Finally, safety advice moderates the relationship between employee involvement and safety participation in OSHMS. In conclusion, this research has an implication for OSH practitioners and organization. Based on the limitation discussed in this study, future studies are welcome to fill the gap in order to strengthen the research in this area.
