Differences in the way tense and aspect are employed in the English and Persian grammatical systems and differences in distributions of similar tense forms may lead to difficulties in translation. Researchers have proved that Iranian students learning English have trouble translating tenses from English into Persian and vice versa. This research is an attempt to find out how Persian translators deal with such differences. To this aim, first, as a pre-requisite stage, Persian formal correspondents of the English tense forms were identified by performing a contrastive analysis between tense forms in the two systems. Then, the finite verbs in a selected English novel, ‘Jane Eyre’ by Bronte (1848), were compared with their translations in four Persian translations. By applying Toury’s (1975) model within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies, samples of each tense form were compared and analyzed to identify the strategies employed by the translators. Three main strategies were found; using formal correspondent, applying translational shift, and omission. In addition, six types of shift, based on Catford’s classification, were identified including; shift from grammar to lexis, unit shift, class shift, structure shift, intrasystem shift, and lexical shift, then frequency of each type was calculated. The findings descriptively indicate how each English tense form is translated in Persian. For each tense form, different types of translations and the frequency of each type are given. The findings can contribute to the body of knowledge of translation studies, and especially to researchers dealing with translation of English into Persian and with teaching English to Persian native-speakers.en_US
