Abstract
Determination of phthalates in environmental matrices become crucial in recent years due to the growing international concern about the health effects of phthalates. In the present study, a greener method based on cloud point extraction was developed for the extraction of selected phthalates in environmental samples using non-ionic silicone surfactant of DC193C. The parameters affecting the extraction efficiency such as the surfactant concentration, salt types, salt concentration, temperature, and incubation time were evaluated and optimized. Good linearity with R2 in the range of 0.9963 – 0.9988 for all calibration curves were obtained. The LODs were 0.95 μg L-1 (diethylhexyl phthalate) and 0.72 μg L-1 (dibutyl phthalate) and the LOQs were 3.16 μg L-1 (diethylhexyl phthalate) and 2.42 μg L-1 (dibutyl phthalate), respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied in extracting the diethhylhexyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate in selected environmental samples under optimized conditions with satisfactory recoveries in the range of 82 – 98 %.
