Abstract
The main objectives of this study are to determine residents' perceptions to the positive and negative impacts of tourism activities on economic, social, and environmental aspects in the Jordanian regions of Jerash, Madaba, and Ajloun. A Iotal of ~80 questionnaires were obtained from a random sampling of residents of Jerasll, Madaba, and Ajloun, and 118 questionnaires from tourists. The study shows that most residents had moderate perceptions toward economic, social and environmental impacts of tourism. The majority of respondents at Jerash and Madaba were moderate in their perceptions toward both the positive and negative impacts of tourism, while in Ajloun the majority of respondents had a positively high perception toward the positive impact of tourism, and a negatively moderate perception toward the negative impact. The study also revealed that there are significant differences between demographic variables and residents' perceptions toward the positive and negative impacts of tourism. Female respondents indicated that they were more conscious about the impacts of tourism compared to male respondents, and the younger group of respondents tended to show the highest level of perception of the positive impact factors. The research also reveals that the majority of tourists to Jordan were from the Middle East. Europeans were mainly from Germany and the UK; and others were from the USA, East Asia, Australia and Africa respectively. The majority of these aged 30-59 years, and was endowed with good background and well-employed. Summer has been identified as the peak season for tourist arrival; intermediate-class hotels and apartments are found most preferred. Tourists' length of stay is usually between 4-7 nights, with an average spending of about US$ 100 a day per person. Most tourists are found satisfied with the infrastructure and the services provided.
