Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to determine the effects of direct instruction
on patriotic values in the teaching and learning of history to inculcate patriotism
by using multi perspective sources (other than text book) and history text book
as history teaching sources. This study employed a quasi-experimental design
involving two experimental groups and one control group. A sample of 355
students was selected from three different secondary schools from a district in
the state of Johore. Treatment group l (KE l) was given history lessons using
multi perspective history teaching sources (other than text book), treatment
group ll (KE ll) was given history lessons using only history text book, while the
third group was designated as the control group (KK). Data were collected
through a questionnaire (‘Soal Selidik Patriotisme Terhadap Negara’) developed
by the researcher to measure aspects of patriotism-namely pride, loyalty, and
respect for national symbols. The questionnaire has a reliability index of 0.95.
Data were analyzed by utilizing a three way ANOVA computation followed by
post hoc multiple comparison test. The results of this study indicate that there
were significant differences in patriotic achievement between treatment groups
and gender. However, there was no significant difference in patriotic
achievement between ethnic groups. The results also showed there were no
significant interaction effects in patriotic achievement between treatment
groups, ethnicity, and gender. However there were significant interaction effects
in patriotic achievement between treatment groups and gender, and between
ethnicity and gender. As a conclusion, the researcher suggested the application
of direct discussion of patriotic values as a moral value, and the using of multi
perspective history teaching sources to inculcate patriotism in the teaching and
learning of history.
