Abstract
The objective of this research is to describe “The Role of Women in Economy and Social Development in North Sumatera from 1950-1990: Special Focus on Women’s Activities in Medan Municipality”. This overview is more focused on women’s activities in North Sumatera, particularly Medan Municipality, among others; such as in the agriculture, plantation and industrial sectors. It will also describe the role of professional women who are actively contributing their knowledge to various fields.
This research also attempts to relook the varion activities performed by the women in North Sumatera, such as their involvement in the economic and social sectiors. It also focuses the role of women in contributing to the regional development in North Sumatera.
Besides participating in the economy and social activities, the women also actively participate in regional development and also in assisting the running of the family. Women have dual role in the daily needs as housewife and also to add the family`s income. It can be conduded that play a significant role in the economic sector, contributing to the growth of North Sumatera, particularly in Medan Municipality such as from the agriculture, plantation and trade aspects.
