dc.description.abstractActive RFID tags have been widely used for monitoring applications. However, high power consumption becomes one of the drawbacks of the active RFID tags. Most of the active tags uses sleep mode to reduce power consumption. However it can cause data lose because the tag cannot receive any data during the sleep mode. Therefore, the sleep mode is not suitable for monitoring application. This project proposes a new technique of low power consumption for an active tag application. This technique consists of switching and linear regulator circuit in the active tag power management system. The circuit will provide a fixed input voltage to the active RFID tag. Power consumption during sleep mode, during transmitting data and during receiving data are tested. Five different types of switching and linear regulator IC which are AS1320 step up DC-DC converter, TPS61221 step up DC-DC converter, TPS61220 step up DC-DC converter, TPS60500 step down DC-DC converter and TPS78001 low-dropout regulator are tested in order to get the optimum result. All of the developed prototypes are tested in laboratory scales with the distance between the tag and the host is 5 meter. Results show that, the power consumption can be reduced until 88% by using TPS78001 low-dropout regulator, 70% by using TPS60500 step down DC-DC converter and 1% by using TPS61221 step up DC-DC converter. While using AS1320 step up DC-DC converter and TPS61221 step up DC-DC converter increased the power consumption by 70% and 15% respectively. As a conclusion, the use of the proposed TPS78001 low-dropout regulator can reduce power consumption of active RFID tag by 88% and it is suitable for monitoring applications.en_US
