Abstract
Occupational stress has been known as a major cause of safety and health issues among salespeople in retail organizations. Despite several studies have indicated the essential of factors and outcomes of occupations stress in several occupations, a knowledge gap on occupational stress still remains a hot topic of interest for academics and practitioners. This study intends to examine the relationship between occupational stress, job demands, workplace bullying, task performance, physical health problem and mental health problem. In addition, it examines the moderating impact of perceived organizational support (POS) on the relationship between job demands, workplace bullying, and occupational stress. Questionnaires survey was employed and a total of 222 salespeople presently working in large-scale retail organizations in Malaysia were participated in this research. All the data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and Structural Equation Modeling (Smart PLS). The findings revealed job demands and workplace bullying have a positive relationship with occupational stress. The results also showed that occupational stress has a positive relationship with the outcomes, namely physical health problem and mental health problem. The relationship between occupational stress and job performance was positive, which was opposite of what had been hypothesized. The findings of the present study also revealed the moderating effect of POS on the relationship between factors (job demands and workplace bullying) and occupational stress. Based on the findings of the present study, POS does not moderate the relationship between job demands, workplace bullying and occupational stress. Hence, the findings of this study are useful to both academics and practitioners who wish to understand the factors and outcomes of occupational stress so the occupational stress among salespeople can be managed and minimized in the retail organization. The results are discussed in relation to the direction for future research on occupational stress in any occupations and approaches to stress reduction.
