Abstract
This study aims to investigate the determinants of sustainable travel behavior and to examine the nature of relationships that exist between the determinants. Three determinants were included in the framework namely; perceived effectiveness of policy implementation process, attitudinal factors and car use habit in predicting sustainable travel behavior. The study looks at the individual travel behavior and their evaluations of the three determinants in impacting their behavior. Using extensive literature reviews and empirical data, measurement scales of all determinants were developed and validated. Employing a quantitative technique, self-administered questionnaires were distributed to car users in Klang Valley. The findings revealed a positive relationship between perceived effectiveness of policy and all attitudinal variables, but negatively related to sustainable travel behavior. The findings of this study also revealed that all components of attitudinal determinants are significantly related to sustainable travel behavior; except for attitudes towards car use which was found to contradict the hypothesized relations. This study also found that car use habit acts as an obstacle to transforming intention into sustainable travel behavior direction. The important implications of the results for theoretical and managerial decision making in developing strategies into sustainable travel behavior direction are discussed. This study makes final remark on the difficulties associated with changing behavior and calls for continued research within this area.
