Abstract
This study focuses on the toxicity of indoxacarb, a relatively new insecticide compound and its effects on several biological parameters of the German cockroach, B/attefla germanica (L.). When treated topically on both nymphal and the adult stages of German cockroaches, it was found that its performance was comparable to chlorpyrifos, but slower than deltamethrin. Sublethal effects studies revealed that treatment of LOso doses on nymphal and adult stages did not cause any profound effect on nymphal development, neither did it cause any significant effects on incubation period and preoviposition period. However, total, number of nymphs produced by the treated females showed a significant reduction (P < 0.05) when compared with that of the untreated ones. In addition, the longevity of treated adult males were also affected by sublethal dose of ind<?xacarb. Further studies were conducted using indoxacarb and ,noviflumuron (a relatively new chitin synthesis inhibitor) at several concentrations (1, 10, 50 & 100 mg/m2 ) to evaluate their effects on simulated German cockroach populations. For both compounds, a single treatment only lasted for 3 months and retreatment was needed. Significant control of the simulated population was achieved with indoxacarb at 100 mg/m2 when ~.,i compared to that of the untreated population at 6'" month post-treatment, while ~,' noviflumuron caused population elimination at the alh month, Bait formulations containing indoxacarb in the form of gel (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0% indoxacarb) and bait station (0.1 %) were evaluated in this study. Comparison was made with several bait formulations containing fipronil and hydramethylnon. In the evaluation of bait stations, fipronil at 0.03% and 0.05% showed better efficacy than indoxacarb (0.1 %). Indoxacarb was also found to exhibit secondary kill effects towards German cockroaches.
