Abstract
This thesis studies the structural relationships between adjectives and other elements in
Malay sentences. The data are Malay sentences containing adjectives. This research is chosen
..
because presently there is hardly any serious study on adjectives and their relationships with
other elements in a sentence. It is also felt necessary to be carried out because adjectives are
among the main word classes in the Malay language.
This thesis aims to analyse a construction of adjectives and the relationships between
adjectives and other elements in Malay sentences.
This research is based on the Bloomfieldian structural theory of language. Through this
theory, the thesis examines the occurence of adjectives and other elements in syntactic and
morphological constructions; that is analysing their relationships in sentences. One finding of the research is that adjectives are formed in two ways: that is, from the
baSe words and from the derived words. Another is that there are several adjectives where a
, relationship exists before, after, and before as well as after the adjective itself. This leads to what
is known as "tight" and "loose" relationships.
This study suggests that there is a need to do further research such as to examine the use
of adjectives in the classrooms, to compare adjectives with the verbs-to-be, and to study the
frequency of use of adjectives with other word classes in Malay sentences. Finally, it is hoped
that the findings from this research can be utilised in language education so as to enable the
users of Malay to upgrade their mastery of the language.
