Abstract
Metalinguistic awareness has been found to be significantly related to early reading ability. One of the aspects of metalinguistic awareness is phoneme segmentation. Among beginning readers, it has been observed that those who are weak in phoneme segmentation are also weak in reading ability. Similar observations on children learning to read· alphabetic language have been reported in several foreign studies. The present study is a correlational study conducted to ascertain the relationship between phoneme seg- . mentation and early reading ability among Malay children from the aspect of metalinguistic awareness. For the purpose of this study, four tests were constructed, namely (a) Phoneme Segmentation Test (b) Vocabulary Test (c) Reading Comp~ehension Test and (d) Oral Reading Test. Test sessions were employed in the beginning of the year of 1993 to conduct the tests. A totai of 80 grade 2 pupils aged 7 - 8 years old (37 boys and 43 girls) were involved. The subjects· scores on vocabulary, reading comprehension and oral reading were combined together to form the scores of early reading ability. Pearson Coefficient was used to compute the correlation between phoneme segmentation and early reading ability and its :subskills. ' lThe result shows that phoneme segmentation correlates ' ! s i g n if i cant 1 y with ear 1 y read i ng a b i 1 i t.y- ( r = 0 . 8 4 , p · < .001). Similarly, phoneme segmentation is found to correlate significantly -with the subskills of early reading ability: the abilities involving vocabulary (r= 0 . 77, p < .001), reading comprehension (r= 0.79, p < .001) and oral reading (r= 0.81, p < .001). The findings suggest that phoneme segmentation is an important aspect in the process of learning to read the Malay language among Malay children. Even though the present study reveals a high and significant correlation between phoneme segmentation and early reading ability, it is not able to support a causal relation. Subsequent research that would look into the nature of the relationship between the two variables is suggested
