Abstract
This study is about community participation in the dengue control in Tanah Tinggi
Kota Binjai, Sumatera Utara , Indonesia. Dengue is one of the serious health
problems in Kota Binjai. Various efforts in dengue prevention have been carried out
by health departments, but each year dengue cases increases in the community. This
study focuses on few important research questions which include how much
knowledge, perception and practice (cadre, community leaders and community) with
regards to dengue fever; understanding social problem with regards to dengue; to
explore the different strategies in dengue prevention control; as well as getting
suggestions that can be shared in dengue control in the community. This qualitative
study has involved 25 informants, and the data collected through in-depth interviews,
observation and focus group discussions. Study findings have indicated that almost
all informants do have good knowledge and perception about dengue fever.
However, the practice of mosquitos control were still relatively low as there were
mosquitos found at the surveyed locations. Among the problems that contributes to
the increase of mosquitos were due to over crowded population, lack of community
involvement in mosquitos control effort, as well as the high mobility of the
community. All of these problem did contribute to the increase of dengue fever. The
strategies used by the community include preventing self from mosquito bites,
eliminate mosquito larves, and provide early treatment for those experiencing dengue
fever. Even with these strategies, it is unable to help reduce the rate of dengue in the
community.
