The utilization of semiconductor based sensor pellet in most of gas and fire detectors has gained a lot of interest in safety technology. This approach gives numerous advantages such as the simplicity in device structure, low cost fabrication, robustness in practical application and adaptability to a wide variety of reductive and oxidative gases. This tech;1ology involves the detection ana conversion of gases evolved from fire such as carbon monoxide (CO)Jo carbon diox:de (C02) on the rellet via catal~1ic reaction_._ _ The objective of the current research is to develop and optimize a composite catalytic pellet capable of detecting CO at lower concentration and temperature. Various composite sensor pellets comprising of Sn02 as the substrate and ZnO as the dopant were made. The influences of ZnO composition, pellet thickness and the third metal oxide as dopant have been investigated through electrical conductivity and sensitivity towards carbon monoxide. The results showed that pellets containing 3wt% ZnO and 2mm thickness gave the optimum sensitivity towards CO. The sensitivity was improved by adding powder lanthanum oxide (La20 3} as the third dopant. The sensing temperature was further reduced by adding La20 3 obtained from adsorption of five cycle of 0.5 x 1 o·2M liquid LaC b. 7H20 and calcined at 850°C. Based. on Three Level Factorial Design ·for optimization study, the generated equation model showed R squared value approximately 1.0. The predicted optimum sensitivity was 98.9%.en_US
