| dc.description.abstract | Ethnic study is gaining importance in plural societies, including Malaysia, in their earnest effort in developing national unity and integration. How the Chinese in Malaysia identify themselves has great impact on the issue of national unity in Malaysia given the large number of them in terms of population in the country. The objective of this thesis to examines the state of identity maintenance and identity change among the Kelantan Chinese Peranakan community in Kampung Pasir Parit, Pasir Mas, who are an acculturated rural Chinese community in a Malay populated area. The Chinese Peranakan are a unique sub-ethnic group of the Chinese in Malaysia. They are the products of acculturation through social interactions with the Malays. The „pure‟ Chinese regard them as „half Chinese and half Malays‟. They are in fact a distinct and self perpetuating hybrid community. As a Peranakan community, the Kelantan Chinese Peranakan have acquired a unique dual identity as a consequence of acculturation by the local Malays. Amalgams the dual identity of the Peranakan as a kind of hybrid identity. Acculturation in the context of this paper refers to the adoption by a minority group of the cultural traits of the dominant group. This paper aims to review these writings by examining their epistemology and methodology which categorize them according to the nature of knowledge. Two major categories have been identified as the “author-oriented” and “actor-oriented” types of knowledge. The method of this tesis used deep-interview (150 responden), group focus discussion (50 responden) and provided 100 questioner.
