Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare two methods of teaching ear1y reading skills in the Malay Language for preschoolers. The two methods are the Structured Vowel Control Method (SVCM)J and Phonic Combination Method (PCM). Both methods were compared with the Conventional Alphabet-Spelling Method. The study uses quantitative research design through a quasi-experimental method. The subjects under the SVCM and PCM treatment were described as the experimental group, whilst the subjects under the Conventional Alphabet-Spelling Method were used as control. The experimental groups consists of 125 preschoolers (SVCM = 62, PCM = 63) and the control group consist of 38 preschoolers. In addition, gender was chosen as ·the moderating variable to identify the effect of gender on different methods. The experiment was conducted for the duration of twelve weeks. A pre-test and post-test were administered to the subjects. The instruments used in this study were the Reading Readiness Test and the Early Reading Skills Test. The gain score of the tests were analyzed using the analysis of multivariate of covariance (MANCOVA). The achievement of Reading Readiness Test was used as a covariate. The Pearson Correlation analysis was used to identify the correlation between open syllable and close syllable reading skill achievement.as well as correlation between reading readiness and early reading skills achievement. The significance level of 0.05 was useg for accepting or rejecting the hypotheses. In addition, a structured interview format was adopted for the purpose of clarifying the quantitative ?ata. The findings of the study showed a significant difference in early reading skills achievement on the methods used. However, the achievement of the preschoolers in the control. group was better than those in the experimental group. There was no significant difference between genders on reading achievement test score methods used. The correlation between open syllable and close syllable reading skills achievement were, however, found to be significant. There was a significant' correlation between reading readiness and reading skills achievement on SVCM and PCM. However, there was no significant correlation between reading readiness and reading skills achievement on Conventional Alphabet-Spelling Method. To conclude, the findings showed that the Conventional Alphabet-Spelling Method was more appropriate for the preschoolers in this study on teaching early reading skills compared to the SVCM and the PCM. However, the value of the effect size was small.
