Abstract
The subject of Building Pathology is growing in importance. One of the building function is to
prevent the water penetration and to give envelop to the occupants. Dampness is one of the most
common defects found in the building especially in tropical climate country and it occurs through
many reasons. In the tropical region of the world dampness in building is as much as problem as
in temperate climate. It result invisible wetting of walls, ceilings and floors, blistering paint, bulging
plaster, mould on the surface and fabrics and sulphate attack on the brickwork. It also adversely
affects the living condition of occupier, cost rapid deterioration on building material and
components, may lead to structural problems, degrade finishes and result in deterioration in
furniture, fixtures and fittings. This dissertation i~ aim to understand on the causes, sources and
effects of the dampness problem to the building. This study attempts to provide a guide on
investigating dampness occur at the institutional building. Tools and equipments has been
explore to suit with the approach during the investigation. Three case studies (Library Building
UiTM Perlis, FSPU Annexe Building UiTM Perak and Tekun Hostel Building, USM Penang) has
been carried out which includes all the investigation procedure, method of investigation and result
from the investigation. The studies also diagnose the dampness problem and suggested the
possible remedial work which can follow by the occupants or the owner of the building. The
correct diagnosis of the cause of dampness is not always easy and many factors can be playing
apart and it will effect on the functional of the building. Stage 1 and stage 2 investigations will
identify the symptoms and possible causes of the dampness problem. Stage 3 and 4 will detailed
the investigation and it will help to predict the actual causes of the dampness including remedial
work to be carried out. Detail investigation and laboratory analysis on the material is required to
confirm the actual dampness problem.
