Abstract
Communication technology has developed rapidly since the invention of the first
telephone model in 1876 right up to the introduction of the wireless broadband today.
The increasing capability of the technology moves on par with the increasing of quality,
whilst the communication cost has decreased accordingly. More recently, analog voice
has been transformed into digital form for transmission through the internet using Voice
over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. However, because of the failure to support
this technology in terms of infrastructure it has dampen its widespread use. Replacement
of internet access personal computers with embedded system that is more economical,
specific and simple is seen as a solution. To remedy this situation the design of an
embedded system that accomodates real-time and high reliability features were
introduced. The design starts with the understanding of the product’s life cycle and
subsequently the design verification technique was carried out step by step. The test
processes involve burn-in test, statistical component counting method, calculation of
real-time feature and cost comparison. This research has produced an embedded system
which predicted to withstand the life span of VoIP technology and also satisfy two times
the specificied real-time requirements. Besides that, the product cost is estimated to be
only around 1/6 of the current available system in the market.
