Abstract
This study examined the relationship between physical fitness and self-concept
in a group of Malaysian female university students.
The relationship between self-concept and physical fitness is one that
has attracted much interest in recent times. However, much of the
research has been conducted using children or male subjects, and little
if any has been done using women, in a Malaysian context. It seemed
appropriate, therefore to look at this relationship with regard to
Malaysian women.
The ~ample in this study were the female students undertaking a two unit
physical education course within the Education Faculty at Universiti
Sains Malaysia (USM).
-The study sought answers to the following few questions:
i. What is the physical fitness of female university students
completing a two unit course in physical education at USM?
ii. What is their self-concept?
iii. ~~at is their perceptions of their physical abilities and fitness?
iv. What is the relationship between these three factors for this
group of females?
Three instruments were used in this study. They were the Tennessee Self-
Concept Scale (TSCS) to measure total self-concept, Dr. Kenneth Coopers
1.5 mile run to determine physical fitness and Sonstroem's Physical
Estimation and Attraction Scale (PEAS) to measure perceptions of physical
ability and fitness.
The results indicate that there is no significant relationship between
self-concept and physical fitness "in this group of females. They also
indicate the poor levels of physical fitness within this group.
On the basis of this research, a case could be made for greater education
about the benefits of being physically fit, not only to improve health
but also to enhance self-concept.
