Abstract
This study is concerned with the forms and structures of dramatic texts from experimental Malay theatres (TEM) produced during the 1980’s and 1990s. The objective of this study is to identify the characteristics of the various components, which make up these dramatic texts as well as the structural polar. Forty-four texts categorized as experimental drama were used as primary data. The methods used in this study are content analysis and subsequently structural analysis. The findings of the study reveal that the Malay experimental theatre dramatic texts produced in the last two decades, have utilized various approaches include the inclusion elements from the Malay performing arts, the use of modern and traditional Malay language structures and elements from the experimental theatre genre. There appears to be an increase in the use of elements from the Malay performing arts from texts written in the 1980’s and 1990’s compared to those produced in the 1970’s. This has created a different experimentation style in experimental texts which use these elements extensively, compared to existing experimental texts, and this study refers to these treats as folk experimentation or eksperimentasi rakyat.
