dc.description.abstractThis cohort study was done to determine the quality of life of myocardial infarction patients at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) before and after undergoing three months of cardiac rehabilitation. Eighty patients with myocardial infarction admitted to the Coronary Care Unit HUSM were selected using purposive sampling. Quality of life status were measured by interviewing patients, using both the generic Short Form 36 (SF36) and the disease specific Quality Of Live After Myocardial Infarction (QLMI) questionnaires before and after the cardiac rehabilitation programme. The pre and post scores of both SF 36 and QLMI were analysed for any change in the quality of life scores after three months of rehabilitation. The results showed that the quality of life of patients in general (SF36) before and after undergoing the cardiac rehabilitation programme were generally low, with a mean score of 78.8 before cardiac rehabilitation and 83.2 after cardiac rehabilitation, giving a difference of 4.41, which was statistically not significant (p= 0.24). The quality of life after myocardial infarction (QLMI) mean scores were higher at pre rehabilitation, (48.9) while the post rehabilitation mean score was 46.4, giving a negative difference of -2.49 (p=0.52). It was concluded that the quality of life of myocardial infarction patients in HUSM after three months rehabilitation was still low and that the cardiac rehabilitation programme did not significantly improve their quality of life. The cardiac rehabilitation programme should be reviewed to furthur improve the quality of life of myocardial infarction patients in Hospital USM.en_US
