Abstract
This academic exercise discusses the various sculptures of Ganesa which are found in temples in and around the district of Kuala Muda, Kedah. I chose sculpture of Ganesa as my research material because Ganesa is a Hindu deity which has a unique form. Its figure is a combination of human and elephant form. Apart from this, this topic was chosen because it has not been explored and researched by anyone until now. Another point that I would like to stress is the fact that Ganesa’s image and Hinduism are so intertwined that they can not be separated from each other. Thus, I have to include Hinduism and the beliefs of Hindu’s in discussing the procedures that takes place in the sculpturing of Ganesa’s image. This academic exercise has been written in such a way as to provide the reader a clear picture of Ganesa, and appreciate the artistic elements that is found on its sculpture. This research has 5 chapters. The first chapter provides an explanation about the birth of Ganesa. The second chapter on the other hand, explains the temples’ plans in which Ganesa is positioned in the district of Kuala Muda. The third chapter consists of explanations on the various parts of Ganesa, types of media and the sculpturing process. Followed by chapter four, in which analysis of Ganesa’s image in terms of size, media, colour, and positions is visualised. Finally, chapter five provides information about the aesthetic values that are found on Ganesa’s image. This academic exercise has been written based on research, observations, interviews, primary and secondary reference materials. As this research is a pioneering endeavour, it is hoped that the mistakes and shortcomings could be forgiven.
