Abstract
This is a preliminary study aimed at fulfilling the vacuum in the study of comparative literature between English poetry of John Keats and Indonesian poetry of Sanusi Pane with special reference to Romantic poetic expressions through the use of symbols inherent in their expressions by using symbolic approach based on the background of the two poets. The objective of this study is to identify the symbolic signs enumerated by the two romantic poets and to see the similarities and differences in their poetic expressions on selected poems. This analysis shows romantic poetics are hidden in the use of symbols by the two poets and also the similarities and differences between the symbols especially on poetic expressions based on the background and experiences of the poets. Data gathered as a source for comparison in this study are selected from four romantic poems of John Keats and ten poems of Sanusi Pane. The study shows the use of seven similar symbols, that is, birds, flowers, stars, hermit and the colours of green, grey and white; whereas the use of several different symbols, such as symbols relate to death, imagination and elements of nature. These symbols are expressed in reference to particular objects that have same componential mean mg.
