Abstract
This thesis is a study on Singgora clay roof tile. Early record has stated that the technology of Singgora roof tile making was brought into Songkla by the Chinese traders in the 16th century. From this juncture, the expertise of making such tile spreaded to parts of Kelantan and Trengganu to the point that Singgora roof tiles were regularly used for roofing purposes in the traditional Malay architecture, as well the Thai and the Straits Chinese communities, particularly in the building of houses, wakaf, mosques, Buddhist temples, gates and mouselum. However, to date, Singgora roof tile making has dwindled to the point that there is only one such roof tile making effort at Kampung Pengkalan Baru in operation. The problem statement in this research started from the facts that Singgora roof are not strong enough to withstand strong winds, fallen tree branches, coconut palms or anything of similar nature. These shortcomings come about due to the physical properties of the roof itself and the way it is designed for it is found to be rather on the thin side. Hence, it is the main aim of this research to come out with the solutions that can improved the shortcomings of Singgora roof tile that have been mentioned. This is achieved through infusing much better strength to the singgora clay and the way the tiles are assembled in the more economic manner. As such, the added value is not merely addressing the aesthetic aspect. The methodology used in this research will be based on the mixed method, qualitative as well as quantitative. The data for the qualitative part will be drawn the history of Singgora roof tile, the processes of its making and the prototype evaluation. The necessary information will be obtained through interview, observation and written documentation. On the other hand, for the quantitative part, the data will be obtained through various experimental methods, mainly MOR, XRF, XRD, SEM and actual physical tests on the clay components. As for the tensility test, MOR will be the main instrument used when testing the clay strength. Based on the overall MOR findings, it has been proven that the formula that used lithium carbonate provided the highest strength when compared with the other materials. In summary, through new design and giving it added strength of singgora roof. It will continue to be relevant in the national architecture needs of 21st century.
