dc.description.abstractThe contemporary study demonstrates the adaptation of Social Exchange Theory (SET) to examine the relationship between community attachment, community involvement and residents’ place image and local residents’ support towards Penang sustainable tourism development with the mediation effect of perceive benefits and perceived costs. A survey of 196 respondents was conducted in Penang island through self-administered questionnaire distributed via social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and WeChat. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 and Partial Least Square (PLS) version 3.0 were utilized to examine data analysis. The result driven from analysis revealed that community involvement is an essential factor that influences residents’ support for Penang sustainable tourism development. In contrast, community attachment and residents’ place image were not significantly related to residents’ support. Besides, community involvement was found no significant relationship towards residents’ perceived benefits and perceived costs on Penang sustainable tourism development while community attachment and residents’ place image did positively related to theirs perceived benefits and perceived costs. In addition, the mediation effects of perceived benefits and perceived cost were not found between community attachment, community involvement and residents’ place image towards residents’ support for Penang sustainable tourism. Present research provides an in-depth understanding of local residents’ support towards sustainable tourism development in Penang. The research findings can be used to formulate strategies for the tourism industries, property developers, academia, policy maker and regulatory bodies to enhance the support from local residents towards Penang sustainable tourism development.en_US
