Abstract
Nowadays, many Tenaga Kerja Indonesia (TKI) who had been working officially in Malaysia gained their succeses and lived comfortable life, although there are some of them are unfortunate for example, some TKI being tortured, badly threatened and experienced injustice while working here. Most of the cases happened to the maids in domestic houses. One of the biggest case being reported in media was the case of Nirmala Bonat' s torture while working for Yim Pek Ha at her house. Nirmala Bonat was a house maid from Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia who escaped from her employer's house on May 2004 after being tortured to most part of her body. The case caused public attention not only in Malaysia or Indonesia and but also internationally. Consequently Yim Pek Ha was sent to jail for 18 consecutive years in 2008 after 4 years trials. Thus, research problem is based on constructivism paradigm particulary news report. News in contructivism is seen as a different fact rather than the real meaning (empirical fact). This research is exploring of how the media revealed the reality in Nirmala Bonat' s case in the newspapers. The research investigated two newspapers, that was Waspada from Indonesia and Utusan Malaysia from Malaysia. The newspapers chosed by researcher based particulary on their news content and their circulation and readership. This research used triangulation method based Norman Fairclough's methodology, with two levels of research: news text and newsroom. For the news text level, researcher applied quantitative content analysis (content analysis) and framing analysis (constructivist). For the newsroom level, researcher applied in depth interview method with the newspaper editors. The result of this research showed that news construction of Nirmala Bonat's case in Waspada or Utusan Malaysia. Both newspapers saw Nirmala Bonat as a victim and should be defended for justice. Yim Pek Ha seemed guilty and deserved punishment. News construction pattern developed by both newspapers was slightly different, Utusan Malaysia shows more legal case, while Waspada wrote more nasionalist expression for their reader. Newspapers ideology immediately did not become first consideration when Utusan Malaysia covered Nirmala Bonat's case. Infact the coverage even did not apply Ketuanan Melayu's ideology and Perlembagaan in their news, even though Nirmala Bonat is a nonMalay she is a Christian and Indonesian citizen. They supported her to obtain justice for Yim Pek Ha's abuse. While Waspada seems to support humanity principle, however Nirmala altough she is Indonesian citizen and Christian, nonetheless principle of humanity was the main expression in Waspada 's news coverage.
